The organ in the Auditorium: a familiar sight and a familiar sound
In 1966 TU/e celebrates the 10th anniversary of its foundation, and later that same year the Auditorium building is completed. Contrary to the tradition that had meanwhile developed of locating a work of (visual) art in or near each newly inaugurated building on the campus, the Board of the University decided to acquire an organ that was to be located in the central hall of the Auditorium. One of the options under consideration was an electronic organ from the Philips firm. Curator Theo Tromp, also vice president of the Philips company, supported this idea. But culture-loving professors decide otherwise and go for a classic design from Pels & Van Leeuwen of Alkmaar. The organ is played mainly on special occasions like openings of the academic year and visits by prominent persons. The 1994 Auditorium fire causes considerable damage and necessitates a thorough restoration. The organ is played on specal occasions up to the present day.
